My New Garden

January 13, 2010 by Doug

One of the things I’ve been working on and playing around with is my new virtual garden. We picked up the property a year or so ago and it was quite a mess with weeds everywhere, some really funky (bad) designs and tons of unfinished construction. I think the economy wrecked the planning for it so we got it pretty inexpensively. :-)

As you can see from the video, I’m building an entirely new kind of garden, one that will allow my friends to visit and hang out – share some information and work on joint projects. I’m at the beginning stages of this right now but the video will show you all that.

Looks like you have your work cut out for you. Have fun with it. Thanks for all you do!

Winter is starting to get to you isn’t it…I think a shade sail for that open roof in the meeting hall would be a good idea :)

  3. Doug says:

@Katharine – nah, I’m just lapping up winter – bring it on…. ;-) But a guy has to do something if he can’t get outside to play in the dirt

Hey, I like it. I’d be willing to come up from NW PA to visit. I haven’t been to Canada in years. Guess I’d need a passport though. Better get working on that while you get that arch thing-y built.

Enjoyed your virtual garden – but – I am such a computer dummy – does virtual garden mean I can visit it from my sofa? Or is it a computer model of your real garden & I have to travel to Canada to use it? I have surely been enjoying your newsletter over the years. Thank you so much for all that you do for gardening. By the way, I love the quote at the end of the newsletter – thanks for putting it back in. Think spring!

  6. Doug says:

@jan – you’re not a dummy – this is fairly new technology. This garden is “virtual” and currently lives on my laptop – I’m in the middle of getting it online so you can visit it and I can keep on building it. But that’s a slow process and I’ll have to let you know when it happens. But not a real one – think Avatar. :-)

  7. Doug says:

@County Agent – yeah, the thing I like about this garden is that it doesn’t snow – doesn’t rain and I get to have plants that (server willing) never die. :-)

Your virtual garden is really awesome. Look forward to seeing the progression as you work on the design.
Wow! You have quite a challenge, but I know that you’re up to the task. I appreciate your willingness to share your expertise. I have learned a lot from your newsletter, videos, and ebooks.

@Candi – thanks he says blushingly

Think Avatar – hee hee – I shall expect a tall blue skinned gardener to update us in the future!

Lovely virtual plot you have there – lots of great ideas, shapes and space to play with.

PS – love the new blog layout – very clear and stylish. Keep ‘em coming.

    Hi Doug

Looks good. What softare are you using?

  12. Doug says:

It’s wonderland server-side software – fun stuff but not in full production yet (a beta release)

  13. Moni says:

    Neat website!
It will be neat to ‘see’ us all at a great garden seminar, watching a Power Point, then having a great discussion session in that large room.
Or perhaps a few who want to visit around the conference table, or better the ‘kitchen’ table chatting about pruning, winter sown seeds, orchards or whatever! This does look like fun!

Not sure how all this works but hey, we need to use our brains or lose them!!

Will be watching to see the garden grow – and you don’t have to wait for “good weather”!! :-)

  14. Doug says:

@Moni – as always, ahead of me. :-) I think it’s going to be fun for some folks to indeed meet and greet in our new garden. And do I have some ideas for you! :-)
