How to Make Compost Tea

July 27, 2008 by Doug

Here’s a video on how to make compost tea – not something you’d want to invite the Queen to …

But you could invite her to the garden afterwards.

Note that this video is part of a series of videos I’m producing for my seminar series and it’s only the first one in the series (more on the way). Also that some of the links mentioned in the video are not active on the seminar site yet.

  1. I tried to watch the video but got a lot of static. Not sure where it is coming from.

Carol – got some static from somewhere on the recording – not your computer. :-( Not sure how it happened and I had “built” the video before I realized it was permanent. One of those things – there’s an entire series of these videos coming along and hopefully that static is only in the first one.

I thought that the compost itself should be placed into a bag or old sock etc. and you dumped it right into the water?

If I use my own compost, would 2 or 3 cups suffice as well?

The Kis System that you use, is it the extended life breewer or regular one?

Thanks again for all your help Doug. you are the greatest!

Incidentally, can a pile of compost sit too long or can it lose its effectiveness?

Ken – let me suggest you wander over to the garden seminar series on compost etc. I’m posting info over there about all this stuff and answering this kind of question and more.

The KIS system shown in the video is the regular one, not the extended life. The compost and foods can be put directly into the bucket, however if you plan on spraying the tea, it is much better to use a 400 micron mesh bag for the compost, and fully soluble foods.

And yes, and pile of compost will eventually lose nutrients and biology over time as the aerobic microorganisms work their way through all the food resources in the pile.

    Thanks for making the video!

Doug, I’ve just found your blog and it’s super. I have one complaint, please can you put some captions on your videos? YouTube can do this. I am very hard of hearing and like many others need to be able to read the words to know what is being said.
This would be so helpful if you could do this

    Thanks
